Keeping Customers at Renewal: Retention in Auto Insurance

Many agencies spend most of their energy on new sales and very little on keeping the customers they already have. But every customer who leaves at renewal has to be replaced just to stand still.

Retention starts at the sale

Customers who understand their coverage, their payment schedule, and what happens at renewal are far more likely to stay. Take the extra two minutes to explain it, in the customer's language.

Reach out before the renewal, not after

When a renewal comes with a higher price, the customer will shop. Contact them first. Explain why the price changed and whether another carrier or coverage adjustment makes sense. A customer who hears from you first usually stays with you, even if they switch carriers.

Help with payments

In non-standard auto, many cancellations come from missed payments, not unhappy customers. Reminders by text, easy online payment, and a friendly call when a payment is late keep people covered.

Stay in touch between renewals

Measure it

Track renewal rate and early cancellations by office and agent. When one office keeps customers better, find out what they're doing and share it. More in The agency metrics I watch every week.
